12 Ways to Eat Healthier on the Cheap: A Manifesto By Denis Faye

12 Ways to Eat Healthier on the Cheap: A Manifesto By Denis Faye

Thanks to a complex web of farm subsidies, chemical engineering, and plain old evil, 21st-century food companies have actually made it cheaper for consumers to eat processed junk instead of healthy, nutritious staples such as fruit, veggies, and lean meats. It would take a book or two to explain how they pulled it off. Instead, I've opted to write this short manifesto: a list of ways you can beat "The Man" by eating healthier and saving money at the same time. Who's with me? ìViva la revolución!

Money and Bread on Plate

1. Buy in bulk. There's usually economy in volume. There's a problem, though. If you're only feeding two people, what do you do with the other 22 chicken breasts you just bought at Costco®? Simple. You divide them into 11 freezer bags and freeze 'em to be thawed out as needed. The same works for many fruits and veggies, except maybe leafy greens. Frozen lettuce? Not so much.

2. Shop online. While known mostly for books and "adult" entertainment, Web retailers such as Amazon offer some amazing deals when you buy in bulk. Granted, you're not going to find much fresh produce, but for staples such as tea, coffee, and cereal, you'll get serious bargains, often on the brands you prefer, which is much better than being at the whim of Sam's Club® buyers.

3. Fresh BluberriesBuy in season. Pick up a pack of strawberries in summer, and there's a good chance it only travelled a few miles to get to your grocer. Buy the fruit in winter, and it had to be shipped from a warm climate on the other side of the planet. It's simple economics. It costs more because it took more effort to get it shipped. Local produce tastes fresher, too, therefore . . .

4. Shop locally. If you go to the farmers' market, you practically have no choice but to buy produce that's in season! Many of you might believe the stigma that these places are all about fancy mushrooms and $9 "heirloom" tomatoes. Yeah, you can get that stuff—and it's delicious—but in between the specialty booths, you'll find hard-working, everyday farmers selling standard produce at below-grocery-store prices.

5. Make your own veggie broth. Don't worry. I'm not going Amish on ya. It's just an easy, fun way to save a couple bucks. Get yourself a 2-gallon Ziploc® bag or something similar, and keep it in the freezer. Every time you have veggie offcuts like carrot peels, green bean ends, or broccoli stalks, throw them in there. You can also add wilted veggies, but nothing rotten or moldy.

Once you've filled the bag, fill a big pot about one-third full with water. Bring it to a boil and cram in as much as you can from your Ziploc. Once it's boiling again, set it to simmer for about an hour. After that, drain the stock into a large bowl. Then, using a strainer, squish the remaining stock out of the veggies and into the bowl.

In 2-cup increments, put the stock in smaller Ziploc bags and freeze them. All up, it takes a couple hours, but it also saves a couple bucks and cuts down on food waste.

6. Coupons and ScissorsCheck out coupon Web sites. The coupons in the Sunday paper are always good, but nowadays, you can really tailor your coupon pile to suit your exact needs by looking through Web sites like Coupon.com or SmartSource.com.

7. Eat less. You might not like to hear this, but do you really need the other half of that burrito tonight? It would make a fine lunch tomorrow. You'll be saving money and your waistline.

8. Do you really need it? Every time you throw something in the grocery cart, ask yourself if you really need it. Sure, we all need our little indulgences, but you don't need a cart full of them. For example, is your guacamole really going to suffer without that guacamole seasoning? (Here's a little hint: a couple shakes of salt is going to have the same exact effect.)

9. Make your own. Jars of pasta sauce and canned chili are majorly convenient, but if you have an afternoon sometime, make a giant pot of the stuff and freeze it for future use in several smaller containers. It'll probably taste better, and odds are, you won't add high maltose corn syrup to your sauce the way Ragu does.

10. Grow your own. A full-blown garden would be quite a challenge for most of us, but a small, potted herb garden can go just about anywhere there's sunlight—and it'll impress your friends/dates/kids. Robust, perennial herbs that you can just clip from when needed include mint, rosemary, and some varieties of oregano.

11. Grocery ListMake a grocery list—and stick to it. Marketers spend millions of dollars researching packaging and shelf placement, to influence you into randomly putting the pretty boxes in your cart. It's time to fight the power. Make a grocery list and treat it like gospel. If you see something shiny and pretty, a tempting bag of potato chips or a spice you've been dying to try out, look at your list. If it's not there, it doesn't leave the shelf. When you get home, if you're still jonesin' for that spice, work it into your menu and buy it next week. (Note that I didn't say the same thing about the potato chips.)

12. Don't shop hungry. Suggestion #11 will be almost impossible to pull off if you're shopping with the munchies. Have a meal before you go so that you're not tempted to pig out while walking down the aisles of your local Piggly Wiggly.

Obviously, all 12 tips here aren't for everyone—except me, of course, because I recommended them—but if you just take two or three to heart, you'll definitely see a shift in your grocery budget. So grab that shopping list and let the revolution begin!

While I’m there on those every 30 days or so I will gladly help you with any problems you may be having and answer any questions. I can even show you some modifications so that you get the most out of any workout.

You have the option of hiring my personal training services AND signing up with me in Beachbody simultaneously if that works for you. If you sign up for my independent Team Beachbody Coaching services then my personal training services, for some people, is not really necessary. It just depends on your budget and your wants. I don’t believe in asking people to spend unnecessary money especially in this economy. As your Independent Beachbody coach I will be able to help you make healthy life style changes, better food choices, motivate you, hold YOU accountable, and ultimately help you develop into a fully functional independently healthy human being for yourself and your family.

Here is a rough breakdown of my Independent Beachbody coaching services and process (notice no price list here because my independent Beachbody Coaching services are free):

  1. Contact me before, during, or after you sign up for the Team Beachbody club so that I can answer your questions, help you decide which program would be best for you, and which daily multi vitamin or Shakeology would be best for you for staying in compliance and for accomplishing your goals.

  2. Sign up with me for “The Club” here:
    Sign up for the
    Club
and pick out a Beachbody program. Picking out a program is hugely important. I don’t want you to be miserable in your workouts. The body innately wants to be worked out or it wears out more quickly with age! Picking out a program that is fun to do is essential here. I LOVE that I get to workout every day simply because I have a blast doing them and that is what I want to show you.

  3. Familiarize yourself with the club area online. This service is open to you 24/7. In the club you can generate very personalized meal plans based on your goals, built in vegetarian options are available, detailed preparations for if you like to cook from scratch or not, you can print up grocery lists so you know exactly what to buy and how much of what to buy to meet your meal plan needs, you can expand your network of support endlessly with other club members, you can keep diaries and journals, track your progress in relation to your goals, you can even enter contests to win money; up to $25,000 just for working out as a club member. I have several friends who have won $300, $1,000, $10,000 and even the grand prize of them all which goes to show it’s very possible you could end up winning a contest just for working out as a club member!

  4. In a few days your program will arrive along with any other purchases. You have my expertise and help for free for life in my capacity as a coach with an academic background in exercise and nutrition so use me! Read all of the contents of your respective program. I can’t say this with enough emphasis… Make yourself take all of your “before” pictures and measurements as outlined in the program materials. It’s time sensitive that you do so. You will never have an opportunity to do this again once your body starts changing. I cannot emphasis this enough!

  5. Write down your goals and what you want to get out of this (i.e. more energy, toning, weight loss, flexibility, total fitness, eating healthy so you can be around a long time for your kids to teach them as well etc.) If you just keep them in your head and not on something tangible like paper then your goals will never seem real enough to do whatever it takes to accomplish them.

  6. Write down any obstacles that have kept you from reaching your goals in the past.

  7. Communicate this with me so that I may help you figure out how to overcome these obstacles. I don’t want anything to get in the way of the learning and doing processes. Those obstacles that kept you from your goals in the past must be dealt with or you risk being stopped by those same obstacles again.

  8. Pick a date on the calendar to begin day one of your Beachbody program then circle that date on your calendar with a marker so that it looks absolutely ridiculous and stands out. Keep that calendar somewhere out in the open so you see it several times every day.

  9. Day one has come. Time to work out and work on the all new you! Remember to focus on making healthy life style changes more than focusing on results. The results will come and they could even come faster than you think if you follow the program including the performance nutrition you will get from the club that you signed up for.

  10. As you embark on your initial conditioning and improvement phases utilize all available assets of your support structure and club materials. Never give up on yourself. You don’t give a baby a deadline to learn how to walk or forget it do you? Of course not so don’t give yourself that option when it comes to your health either.

  11. Success!!! Accomplish your goals and begin the very rewarding new phase of your new life, the maintenance phase! It’s time to maintain your new found stellar health and over all feeling of wellness, FOR LIFE :) The maintenance phase should be filled with variety and new challenges to keep yourself from relapsing forever. Breathe and enjoy your life. Always look for new mountain peaks to climb to keep yourself from getting bored. The maintenance phase is meant to reward yourself with in stellar health and wellness for the rest of your life so treat it as such and it will treat you VERY good in return :)

Most fitness outlines don’t quite go this far. I include the journey and success in this process because you MUST see yourself winning in the end. If you can’t see yourself winning from the beginning then you may sabotage your success before you even get started, making your efforts meaningless. Successful people share a few common personal philosophies that make them successful and one of those common personal philosophies is this… Your attitude before you even get started will determine success or failure in the end.

A Team Beachbody philosophy and three step process that I think beautifully sums up success is this… Decide. Commit. Succeed.

3.) Are you already a personal trainer? I realize I have a huge advantage over you and am taking business away from you if you’re not already supplementing your personal training services with something else. I know personal trainers throughout the country and EVERYWHERE personal trainers are loosing clients due to the economy. Some have even gotten out of the profession all together because their income dropped too much to afford the cost of living and the last minute cancellations got to be too much of a frustration. I invite you to expand your personal training services with me. A “bad” economy has no affect on my income whatsoever. I have actually increased my income this past year while everyone else saw a drop in theirs, especially my personal trainer friends who have not expanded. Expand your personal training business into Independent Beachbody coaching and grow your income back up again to levels higher than previous earnings. Other personal trainers are doing it, I am doing it, and it’s taking business away from those all over the country who won’t expand. You will actually have the added benefit of having me show you exactly how I do it so that you don’t have to re invent the wheel. If you are looking to increase revenues and not have to worry about clients quitting because of the summer, holiday spending, or a bad economy, then watch this short presentation:
VideoPresentation for Personal Trainers

Are you ready to expand? Join me

Oh yes, ANYONE can be a coach with me.
All you need is to make your health a priority in your life and a willingness to help others. Most Independent Beachbody coaches are not personal trainers and are earning extra money anyway. Join me

Change your behavior and see REAL health care reform

There is nothing that the president or congress can do to improve health care if we don't change our behavior when it comes to making better food choices and being more physically active. Presently we are a nation of intervention after falling ill and treating diseases rather than a nation of prevention and counseling people (actually sitting down and talking to them about better food choices and better physical activity as opposed to more expensive drugs and more expensive surgeries).

Pharmaceuticals and health care is profit driven which creates a backwards system of reimbursement. There is no reimbursement for doctors to sit down with their patients and talking to them about behavior change that can prevent future problems, or if a problem already exists, to reverse that problem when possible without the use of expensive drugs and or surgeries in an industry (pharmaceutical industry) that has the largest pricing markup out of any other industry in our market place. That is our national shame right now. The pharmaceutical industry and health care industry, an industry with the important task at making us healthy, has the largest pricing markup out of any other industry in the United States market place. Health care, the care for peoples health, should not be the worlds largest profit center. It has national disgrace written all over it.

The health care reform that is being introduced to Congress right now by the white house is designed to make health insurance more affordable and accessible to everyone regardless of their circumstances. Making health care more accessible in itself is a great idea if it's coupled with an even larger focus on educating people about the importance of behavioral changes for prevention and healthier living otherwise the white houses plan for reform is a recipe to exacerbate the problem as well as the national debt. If the main focus does not shift to changing the behavior of people then unfortunately increasing access to health insurance coverage to more people without changing their behaviors about there lifestyles is simply not financially sustainable insurance legislation. The only way to make it sustainable, temporarily, would be for the federal government to pump more money into it and driving up the federal debt. so high that nations stop borrowing money to us out of fear that we will never have the means to pay them back. At that point, our economy collapses and no one has any health insurance, we will still be sick, and we will be out of work.

We need health care reform coupled with behavioral change initiative or health care reform will only deepen the systemic problem and create new problems. Right now the common practice in health care are only VERY expensive intervention treatments that fuel the worlds largest profit centers that only a very small select few individuals collect those profits from (billions of our dollars, yours and mine) and those select few people do not want to see any kind of health care reform or they may stop receiving billions of our money both yours and mine. That one fact alone should make your blood boil and insist on reform coupled with a larger focus on a behavioral change initiative so that reform will mean something very significantly positive to all of us.

Join a community garden

If you have always wanted a garden of your own but it's just not possible to grow one in your own yard for whatever reason then take a look at community gardening. Many communities across America are now erecting community gardens where members of the community can claim a small piece of the over all garden plot for themselves or their family!

This is something that would be absolutely wonderful for the overall health of people if every community in America were taking part in community gardening. Many people who live in apartments and condos and so on usually don't have the option of growing a garden in their own yard. For a growing number of areas this no longer has to stop you from becoming your own gardener!

Not only is this a great way to grow your own fruits and vegetables and feed your family healthy food but the community gardening also serves as a great social gathering to promote more unity in a community, more friendships and the nurturing of those friendships. Healthy relationships with other people enhances ones own health and total fitness. Friends are more important and rewarding than money.

Learn more about community gardening and find one in your own area that you can take part in by clicking here: American Community Gardening Association

Unbiased shakeology taste truth from non Beachbody people

This story is AWESOME so I hope you take a minute to read through it.

A few weeks ago I co-hosted a shakeology booth. A hundred or so free samples were given away of both the greenberry and chocolate shakeology. This was a PERFECT unbiased opportunity to find out how shakeology really tastes to non Beachbody people. Every single sampler was caught off guard at how heavenly the shake tasted. Not a single negative or even neutral opinion. Everyone has tasted a health shake before so naturally we have a preconceived notion of how it's going to taste. Shakeology is completely different and the expression on these peoples faces, along with their words of high praise, was VERY solidifying to my co host and I that this stuff really is the best tasting shake we have ever had (and the healthiest by a long shot).

Some of the most common immediate responses from sampling shakeology from these unbiased non Beachbody people are, "You're kidding me, this is a health shake???", "I can't believe how good this shake is it's even better than my Starbucks", "Trade my kid for a bag of shakeology and call it even (hahaha)?, and my personal favorite, "How can I get myself one of these?"

As far as my personal opinion of the taste; the chocolate is my favorite and is honestly the best tasting chocolate shake I have ever tasted before in my life. All of the chocolate shakeology samplers that I asked agreed with me. Amazing hey? I have a severe weakness for good chocolate so this chocolate shakeology is a god send for personally, and others. This quenches my severe chocolate cravings and I get to have one of these huge chocolate shakes every single day! That's happiness my friends especially if you're a chocolate fiend like me.

If you haven't tried the greenberry or chocolate shakeology yet I encourage you to get yourself some. If you use it as a meal replacement you won't see an increase in your monthly grocery expenditure, period, so cost cannot be a reason not to get it. If you place a home direct order for shakeology you get FREE shipping for LIFE plus two free workouts which is a nice savings along with two added bonuses.

Shakeology is only available through independent Beachbody coaches like myself. You can look at recipes, info about the shake itself, the savings, health benefits, available discounts and order information here: http://passionforfitness.info/shake

Promise me you'll try some of the recipes listed on my website for shakeology. If you just mix with water rather than milk or orange juice it is not nearly as tasty.

Replace your Medication with Yoga and live Free

What would you say if you could get yourself off of all of your medication or at the very least decrease your medication significantly just from opening your mind to the enormous possibilities of Yoga? If you’re satisfied with hope packaged up nice and neat into a pill to spare you from having to exercise then move on this article isn’t for you.

Yoga as a therapy and a replacement for internal medicine is completely mind blowing. It can literally replace all of your medication or a significant portion of the stock pile you keep in your medicine cabinet. Any modality of exercise (resistance, cardio, plyo, core etc.) is beneficial but there is something truly amazing about Yoga in it’s capacity to treat and ultimately cure illness and disease; probably more effectively than internal medicine ever could in more cases than we would think.

Medical Doctor Loren Fishman says, “End Back Pain Through Yoga," prescribes downward-facing dog for osteoporosis, twisted triangle pose for piriformis syndrome, and side plank pose for scoliosis”. See what I mean about mind blowing? That isn’t even the tip of the iceberg! Here is more from the same Medical Doctor, “It calms people down, just being calm is a tremendous asset when you are in pain."
Doctor Fishman believes yoga and western medicine are naturally well matched and can help patients avoid unnecessary surgery, medication, and suffering.” A possibility of trading unnecessary surgery, medication, and suffering for Yoga??? Count me in!

There are poses in yoga that will help clear artery blockages and reduce high blood pressure. Say bye bye to your high cholesterol and high blood pressure medications. There are other poses that focus more on digestion and mental focus. Yoga is also known to be highly beneficial in terminal cancer, heart problems, reduces varicose veins, improves over all blood circulation etc.

Do you suffer from arthritis? Yoga may help relieve your pain and even cure you! Yoga can even treat infertility problems, improve asthma conditions, clear and regulate bowel movements, reduce or even eliminate menstrual abdomen pain etc. The list goes on and on. This isn’t simply just shedding body fat, toning up and having more energy which is all very nice. In addition to those things yoga is very special from other forms of exercise because it is known to treat and even cure many problems that we typically take drugs for which consequently those drugs have a horrid trade off on vital organ stress.

Unfortunately most doctors in western medicine aren’t referring patients to yoga therapy for cures. Instead most patients aren’t being cured; they are being treated with drugs and most of the time this is totally unnecessary. However; the bulk of the problem here is people. Most people will not comply to exercise and changing eating habits, period, which leaves medicine as the only option. It will be up to you to seek out a local yoga therapist with proper credentials. Ask your doctor to be referred out to a yoga therapist and if he/she thinks it’s a good idea. Sometimes it may not be a good idea so it’s worth clearing that with your doctor.

Some references: http://www.yoga4beginners.org/yoga-therapy.htm
http://life.gaiam.com/gaiam/p/Yoga-Therapy-The-Next-Wave-in-Yoga.html

I can tell you first hand that it feels wonderful to not have to be dependent on medication. If I want to take a trip somewhere I don’t have to worry about remembering to pack enough medicine to keep me going. If I want to be spontaneous there is nothing stopping me! I also have more spending money in my pockets that probably would have gone towards my medicine. I like extra spending money!

I personally have never been dependent on medicine, not even a Tylenol, so I can only imagine the relief that must be felt by those who were able to rid themselves of such things by pure wholesome nutrition and exercise. What a feeling that must be!!!

Some people genuinely need medication to control a problem brought on by genetics. Thank god advancements in medicine make many common issues completely manageable now a days when not so long ago people would suffer their whole lives. But for most of us it seems we have utterly abused the availability of these medicines purely to replace wholesome nutrition and exercise with a pill. What a facade! Medicine doesn’t replace nutrition and exercise! Medicine prolongs the inevitable, makes rich drug companies more rich, and places extra burdens on vital organs as a trade off! If you are taking a medication to treat symptoms that are brought on by physical inactivity and poor nutrition then you need to be realistic; realize that your medication is not a replacement for good nutrition. You’re destroying your vital organs and giving yourself a more probably likelihood of a pre-mature death preceded by a life time of suffering and increased risk factors for disease and illnesses. If you’re ok with that then be honest about it. If you’re on something as an attempted replacement for eating good and being physically active then enjoy yourself and don’t insist on dipping into the health care pool. We cannot afford to financially support you any longer.

Get into Yoga! If you already exercise then add Yoga to your routine! It will do things for you that other modalities of exercise simply cannot. If you don’t know what to do as far as programming an affective yoga routine look at this: http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping?referringRepId=2760 There are several Yoga programs here. My favorite is Yoga ; part of the P90X total fitness program. Yoga booty ballet is great if you aren't looking for something as intense as Yoga X.

Get into Yoga, Today!
