Errors of a Reliance on FDA For Approval

I want to preface this by saying the FDA has an incredibly important role. I would personally like to see the FDA rebuilt from the ground up into the affective agency that it should be to begin with; free of politics and unethical practices.

Three former FDA commissioners including David Kessler says that the FDA has “no mandate for leadership on prevention of food safety problems, no funding to do important research to find ways to prevent food-borne illness and no tools to hold companies accountable for implementing food safety measures and taking quick action when a problem is discovered. Simply put, our food safety system is broken. The reality is that there currently is no mandate, no leadership, no resources, nor scientific research base for prevention of food safety systems.

Committee chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif. said that the “warning signs are clear: FDA is an agency in crisis”. He said that the committee would focus on FDA budget cuts, the agency’s ability to enforce regulations and the legal authorities the agency has to do its job. Waxman also says that, incompetent government can only have deadly consequences. From inside the FDA it's an agency recognized as a broken, ineffective, ill equipped, under staffed, under funded Government agency and the best they can do is cut more funding??? Is anyone out there reading this seriously still depending on the FDA for their food and drug safety??

Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb is quoted as saying that, “the FDA is failing to use its authority to strike a balance on this issue.” – referring to the FDA’s “Broken Approval Process”

Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, called the food safety system 'broken' and said the “FDA needs to restore research and other efforts” – This crosses both isles of politics here. That in itself is remarkable!

Check just a few of the VERY long list of FDA approved drugs that induced heart attacks, strokes, and killed people before they were eventually recalled AFTER the dying had already been occurring for a while: Vioxx, Bextra, Zelnorm, Tysabri, Neutrospec, Cylert, Permax, Baycol, Palladone, thalidomide, and the list gos on and on.

“I will never take anything that is not FDA approved”I’m sure the people who took the above listed FDA approved drugs relied on the FDA for approval to and it killed them. Do you want to be a statistic? For the love of yourself and your family don’t be so arbitrary when putting anything in your mouth that is FDA approved or non FDA approved. If you put all your reliance into anything, FDA or other, then you loose your power and your control over your own destiny. Be a composite of many sources, form your own educated conclusions, seek for the knowledge, make the discoveries that can drastically change the course of your life, OR give up your power to the FDA. At least if whomever you’ve relinquished your power to kills you then you can say it wasn’t your fault. But, removing yourself from being responsible goes with the territory of having no power over your own life.

As it stands right now and in the past it’s more safe to depend on a reputable company in conjunction with your own findings than to depend solely on FDA approval in my opinion. I have a Boat load, no make that a BARGE load of fact based reasonings for my opinion.

The FDA fails to catch serious and often FATAL side effects in a number of drugs before they are approved. Many critics attribute these failures to the agencys close ties with the medical industry; BIG pharmaceutical. ***By the way no one has ever died of a pharmaceutical deficiency. People die of problems stemming from whole food nutrient deficiencies all the time though.***  The close ties between the FDA and BIG pharmaceuticals are exemplified by the 1992 prescription drug user fees act which requires industry to pay user fees that help fund the agencys review of new drugs for approval. Can you see the potential for biased, pre conceived, or “smudged” findings at the expense of peoples lives? Quite literally! This is not an Agency that I personally want to put my reliance or faith in. Do you??

The FDA is a government agency. Everyone knows that government agencies are the most ineffective and corrupt agencies in America and often times are incentivised by kickbacks, extortion, and other extremely un ethical incentives. America has always been at its best when we rely more on ourselves, a free market place, and less on government simply because government is not good at making decisions on our behalf.

I’m going to talk about Team Beachbody simply because I absolutely love the results in peoples lives, including my own, that these products are creating! Nothing in Team Beachbody is FDA approved. The FDA is overwhelmingly partial to Big pharmaceutical and big medicine when it comes to approval which the 1992 prescription drug user fees act demonstrates. ALL Team Beachbody consumables are 100% all natural whole food ingredients. The FDA doesn’t spend a lot of time in this area. The 1992 prescription drug user fees act requires industry to pay user fees that help fund the agencys review of new drugs for approval. But in the FDAs defense, there probably isn’t much logistical need to spend their very valuable time and money examining whole foods. Whole foods have a tendency to do what their suppose to do, that is, to keep us healthy for the past 6,000 plus years. It’s the man made stuff that has to be looked at carefully and often times they get it wrong.

Even with all the data we have available to us in massive volumes about medicines, drugs, pharmaceuticals, whole foods, organic foods etc the one thing that touches me more than all of that other stuff combined is the continuous feedback I get, especially from my Shakeology users, about the ENORMOUS health benefits these whole foods are having in their lives! Their doctors are amazed at their health progress! Their lives are being changed in every way imaginable! When you're feeling good and your healthy it affects every aspect of your life it is quite literally life changing. But to rob yourself of something like Shakeology because it lacks approval from an agency that is admittedly broken and ineffective by its own commissioners is at the very least a questionable philosophy in my opinion.  It's a philosophy that very well could keep a person from making the discoveries that can drastically change his or her life forever.

I have Nothing Bad to Say About McDonald

McDonalds sells a lot of meat and potatoes made with bad ingredients but that's not really true.  In capitalism and free enterprise supply and demand fuel each other but in this instance, today, its the demand that fuels the supply.

I have to give credit to McDonalds for offering nutritious alternatives to their consumers.  The problem is that most of us demand the burgers and fries with the bad ingredients and out control portion sizes with largely empty calories.  If McDonalds didn't meet the demand WE create then McDonalds would go out of business.  It's not as if McDonalds would suffer any if they didn't create healthy options on their menu.  But they do give us the healthy options anyway and they should be given credit for it.

Critics are so quick to blame McDonalds for selling so much unhealthy food with bad ingredients.  What about the responsibility of the consumer?  Are we responsible for what we put into our mouths or is McDonalds responsible for what we put in our mouths?  Is putting the blame on MacDonalds an admission to losing our power in our own lives to MacDonalds?  Wouldn't it be much more liberating if we took responsibility for our own choices rather than relinquishing all our responsibility and our power to McDonalds?    Wouldn't we be in better hands if we depended more on ourselves and less on MacDonald and government?

Most Americans are not even aware how much fat or how many calories are in a McDonalds burger and fries.  This information is literally right under our noses with every order on the wrapper, the place mats if we eat inside, the McDonalds website and there is even a 1 800 number with nutritional information.  Again I must give McDonalds credit here.  The problem isn't that McDonalds isn't making the nutritional information very easy and plentiful to come by.  The problem is Americans are VERY arbitrary eaters.

I have a two yes or no questions for you.  Don't under estimate their importance because odds are extremely favorable they will be yes or they will both be no.

1. Are you an arbitrary eater?
2. Are you unhealthy?

The opposition version of the same two questions...

1. Do you pay attention to Good nutrition?
2. Are you healthy?

If we demand McDonalds and other fast food chains to change first we've got to change.  We are a very arrogant society demanding McDonalds to change without demanding the same from ourselves.  If we don't change but McDonald does change (everyone mistakenly and feels McDonalds should change first) they will simply go out of business while another fast food chain very happily takes over as the bad meat and potato king of our lives.  If we change first, then McDonald and other fast food chains will change because they are in business to supply our demands. That's how they make money!  It's also the way we get healthy, or not.

* 1/2 cup unsweetened peanut butter
* 1 container silken tofu (12 oz.)

Together We Have ALL The Answers

There is no one single individual who has all the answers. People who are really smart know that the more they learn the more they realize they don't know after all.

As a dynamic group of diverse people we have ALL the answers! We know everything! Excluding the great mysteries of the universe of course :-)

Team Beachbody has grown into a group of people so large, so diverse, and so dynamic that we actually have all of the answers. How great is that?!?!

In my view this is among the top reasons why being involved in a TEAM is so valuable (the other top reason is motivation, TONS of it). It's priceless really. You can't put a price on the kind of knowledge that a TEAM possesses! I mean it! This is even better than an Encyclopedia because to get information in a TEAM of people you're interacting with other people who not only educate you but they also MOTIVATE the crap out of you!  Until now I bet you thought that only Shakeology could remove unwanted crap from your body... ;)

Heartache in Life and on Sundays even for yours truly

All of us have to deal with various forms of heartbreaks and in various qualities.  I've been dealing with it since October of 2009.  My workouts, my Yoga, my Team Beachbody Business has been saving me from falling into serious depression.   I still feel the un scientific, inexplicable, and irrational human pains that come with being Heart Broken but I deal with them and somehow make my pains work for me instead of against me.
The only days I seem to lose this battle or at least come close to it are Sundays.  Yesterday, Sunday, was a rough day for me.  Sundays are typically really boring in my world because everyone else is decompressing and preparing for another full week of work.  With boredom comes a wondering mind that seems to drift right into the things that pain me the most; desperately looking for logic to make me happy again all the while fully knowing that logic does not change emotion.  Action changes emotion.

Sometimes there is a real disconnect between knowing and doing.  I know because I've written about this disconnection in past articles.  Sometimes it's far easier to fight for principal (or write about them) than to live up to them.  Yours truly is guilty of not living up to the principles I write about from time to time to.

I suppose one reason I'm writing this is to let all of you know that while I write so boldly, sincerely, genuinely, passionately in my articles that I am still very much a human being who errors from time to time just like the rest of us. I don't have all the answers but even some of the answers I do have I don't always live up to.  One thing I do know that's done greatly to propel me into success is that it's not possible to grow and become better without making mistakes and experiencing pains.  I use that information to look for opportunity every single time I error so that none of my errors or my pains have to be in vain.  The more something hurts the more motivated I am to not let it happen for nothing. (Just so you know, I may not live up to principles I write about in my articles all the time but, when I do live up to them they do indeed work.  My articles are very much a reflection of how I'm achieving so much with a very definitive purpose of helping YOU achieve the things you want to achieve in your own life.  I'm not just sharing to hear myself talk I want YOU to achieve to.)

Honestly I think I come across as a "cookie cutter" perfect kind of guy, that would even annoy myself,  if I don't provide some balance to all of my other articles.  Truth is, EVERY self made wildly successful person has known immense pain.  I think it's important that all of us re affirm each others humanity once and a while and share some of that.  NOT for the purpose of a pitty party; but so we can take some comfort and even celebrate that we are indeed VERY human with unlimited potential for greatness.  I hope that if your heart is broken for whatever reason that you seek comfort without pitty.

Some people go the extreme opposite of self pitty and just keep telling themselves to be positive.  They place all focus on attitude and loose a part of their humanity in my view.   This excerpt from a book by Jeff Olson called, "The Slight Edge" is very relevant here and makes me feel sooooooo good about myself because it gives me the way to do the things I need to do in order to be successful EVEN ON THE DAYS I JUST DON'T FEEL LIKE IT.  I hope that after reading this small excerpt a light bulb turns on for you in a big way...

"Focusing on attitudes isn't any more effective than focusing on actions, because, attitudes are fickle.  Your emotions change.  You can't dictate how you feel.  No matter how much you may tell yourself to feel positive about this how to or that how to, what if you just don't?  Today you're excited about getting fit.  You feel like doing your twenty minutes on the treadmill. Great!  But what if tomorrow you just don't feel like doing it?  To find the path to success, you have to back up one more step.  It's the understanding behind the attitudes that are behind the actions.  It's the philosophy.  That's the secret ingredient.  Your philosophy is what you know, how you hold it, and how it affects what you do.  Yes, you have to know the winning how to actions, and you have to possess the winning attitudes, but what generates all that and keeps it all in place is your philosophy.  Your philosophy CREATES your attitude, your actions, your results, which CREATES your life." - Jeff Olson

THAT is some of the best enlightenment I've ever heard or read in my life.  I would even say it's liberating like.

There are so many different forms and qualities of heart break it's ridiculous.  A year and three months ago I almost lost my father.  I was heart broken til he was alright again but then I was heart broken to learn he will have to be on oxygen 24 /7 for the rest of his life.  He was once a strong man capable of many things and now he isn't capable of walking for more than ten seconds without being out of breath while toting his oxygen tank with him everywhere he gos.  I'm dealing with seeing my dad like that MUCH better now.  Shakeology has helped him a lot he didn't even get sick this year with the change of seasons making it the first time in over a decade he hasnt gotten sick.  Thank god for Shakeology!  With only 30% of his lungs still functional just one bad cold or flu could kill him.  Thankfully getting him to drink Shakeology every day is easy because he loves the way it tastes.

Today the bulk of my heart break comes from a breakup with a girl from last October.  I think most breakups are largely more felt on one side than the other.  On this break up it was felt on my side.  Two and a half years of unmatched compatibility, understanding, sharing, being there for each other, most of the time bliss, free of all jealousy and insecurities that seem to plague most relationships etc.  Never so much as a serious fight which probably just underscores a problem with passion maybe?  Who knows.    Two individually awesome people whos relationship just ran its course.  It was great while it lasted but it ran it's course and that is totally fine.  It may not feel fine but it really is fine.

Logic will never get me to where I want to be but action will.  It already is.  Instead of wallowing in self pitty and looking for others to join me in a pitty party I decided to do another round of P90X by the books for the first time in over two years and I took my Team Beachbody Business to the next level.  I managed to increase my earnings by 81% this year in THIS economy.  As a Team Beachbody coach my earnings are a direct reflection of how many people I'm helping live healthier lives.   I've NEVER made money in a more ethical way in my entire life.

At my last job I was sitting at a desk working for a web hosting company making money probably by facilitating the rotting away of a million bodies across America.  Making money to help people get healthier is MUCH more gratifying! 

I get phone calls and emails nearly every day from people with a renewed smile on their face thanking me for introducing them to the products of team beachbody that is drastically changing their lives.  They share how much better they feel, the progress they are making, their happier healthier family, the sadness that is going away in their lives and whatever else they are excited to tell me about.  I really don't think it's possible to fall into depression even over a heart breaking break up when you have that kind of positive encouragement coming from so many people I'm helping to make a real difference in the lives of.

The funny irony is that many of my coaches and customers probably don't realize how much they are motivating me and cheering me up.  They probably think they are only on the receiving end.  That is simply not true!  If you're one of the many I've helped who happens to be reading this article I sincerely want you to feel good about yourself not only for changing your own life but also for helping another human being feel good about his life.  Don't stop sharing your successes with me!  When you share your stories they really do make a difference in the lives of others who desire that kind of motivation such as yours truly :-)  The most meaningful exchanges are two way exchanges Especially motivational ones!

Low Back Pain and what you can do to prevent it or treat it

Back injuries are the number one disability for people under age 45. 80% of the population will experience an episode of low back pain at some point in their lives and 5% will go on to develop chronic low back pain. Low back pain accounts for 10% of all chronic health conditions in the United States and 25% of lost days from work. Low back pack has become the most expensive benign health condition in America according to the American Council on Exercise.

At a 25% lost days of work Low Back Pain is a significant variable in the state of our economy at any given time. The more people let their bodies decondition and rot the more vulnerable they are to a low back injury that plagues them for the rest of their life which adds to days lost at work and adds to a worsening economy in addition to a worsening health care system that we already cannot afford as is.

Back injuries translate into millions of lost work days every year and cost BILLIONS for medical care, disability payments, and legal payments. Reducing back injury rates is a top priority for all employers. In fact, the most common type of workers compensation claim is a back strain / sprain, which accounts for up to 25% of all claims, representing annual payments of $2.5 to $7 billion, including one half of all disability compensation payments annually.” – American Council on Exercise 3rd edition text book.

It’s worth making a note here that considering Low Back Pain costs BILLIONS of dollars for medical care every year, if more of us took care of ourselves our health care system wouldn’t be so broke and unaffordable and that’s just Low Back Pain! An America without obesity for example would save an extra $487 billion dollars each year—enough to hand every American a $4,270 check annually OR that money could go to pay off the national debt which we have not brought back down to zero since the year 1835! The single largest cause for Low Back Pain is just the simple physical deconditioning of the body. More specifically the back extensors, abdominals, hip flexors, hamstrings, an imbalance of strength and flexibility of the lower back and abdominal muscle groups and poor flexibility in the hamstrings and hip flexor muscles. It sounds complicated but all of those problems can be addressed and prevented with daily physical activity.

In a modern work environment most people have gone from manual labor to sitting on their butts in an office setting all day and without making up for a lack in physical activity with a daily exercise routine. The result is a rotting deconditioning body that over time grows more vulnerable to a low back injury by the day until it inevitably happens. In a seated position the hips are flexed and knees are bent. Since this is the dominant posture by most working people who do not exercise over time this creates a severe muscular and flexibility imbalance between all core muscle groups. The hip flexors become tight and inflexible. The low back muscles become weak. The abdominals become inflexible. The hamstrings become weak. All of these core muscle groups become incapable of handling sudden stress so that when you do make a sudden movement, even something simple like reaching across the table for your light weight cup of coffee or you swat at a fly buzzing around your kitchen window, you strain or sprain something in your low back!

The insidiousness of a rotting deconditioning body is that you get caught completely off guard by what you are and aren’t capable of doing. Maybe just one month ago or one year ago you were able to swat at flies and reach for things across the table just fine but because more time has passed, in which you make daily decisions to continue letting your body rot, that when you do swat at that annoying fly buzzing around the kitchen window today your body is no longer capable and unfortunately you don’t know it until it’s too late because there are no warning signs.

The solution to this potential life time of agony in low back pain is so ridiculously simple. Make decisions every day of your life that make yourself more viable and less vulnerable. If you’re not already physically active every day then add exercise to your daily to do list. Even if it’s just a half hour on most days of the week it can make all the difference in the world if you make it a healthy lifestyle change. Very simple to do yes but also very simple not to do tragically so.

Practice daily Yoga! With its gentle moves yoga can be a safe way to stave off Low Back Pain and increase physical activity. Some yoga poses can even be done from a chair. While yoga can improve strength, flexibility, and a sense of well being, it can also help build stronger bones without the jarring and pounding movement of weight bearing exercises that can be difficult or dangerous for people with fragile bones and joints. - Arthritis Foundation  (This would be my personal favorite and realistically the most affective above all other modalities of exercise and treatment!  Consider working with a CERTIFIED Yoga therapist I bet he/she will help you feel better than people without Low back pain if you can imagine that!)

The Arthritis Foundation on bed rest... Studies comparing bed rest to activity for low back pain find that people who stay active have less pain. More than a few days of bed rest can make back pain worse. Rest for a day or two, but more than three days in bed and you risk losing muscle tone, which can make back pain worse. - Arthritis Foundation

Doing Regular Yoga Increases your Sensativity to Hunger

Some findings about more health benefits from doing regular Yoga published in the August 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

"Researchers at Fred Hutchinson cancer research center in Seattle have found that people who do yoga on a regular basis also practice "mindful eating" and have an increased sensitivity to hunger. This could explain why they have lower BMIs than those who don't do yoga.

Researchers found no connection between other physical activities, such as walking or running, and mindful eating. Those activities lack the mind/body connection that seems to increase mindfulness. Other introspective thoughtful activities such as Tai Chi and meditation would have the same affect as yoga and would increase mindful eating, thereby also helping people to eat less and eventually lose weight."

“Get in Shape with No effort” Oh Please! Show Your Creator Some Respect

Getting in shape with no effort is physiologically impossible and industry knows it. The “get in shape with no effort” industry is 100% dependent on the ignorance of their consumers to be in business.

The human body is an amazing master piece of our maker that is constantly in a process and status of homeostasis. This means it’s only possible to experience change of any kind, positive or negative change, when an unfamiliar stimulus is presented to our mind and body. An unfamiliar stimulus requires effort; some more so than others. The greater the effort the greater the changes. No effort equals no change. To think other wise is naïve. This is the most basic fundamental concept of Exercise Physiology. It also gives us an amazing level of control over our own mind and body IF we step up and take that level of control our maker has given us. To not grab hold of the opportunity to take more control over our mind and body is to let mind and body rot with the passing of time. I cannot think of anything more lame. It’s a blessing to have such a gift we’ve been endowed with by our creator so show your creator some respect and use it!

A tread mill, bike, or elliptical machine will produce some changes at first if you’re body is not use to it but because those motions are so repetitive the human body will adapt to these machines more quickly than anything else. Once adaptation to a new stimulus stops, so do the changes. In fact, on those particular machines, it’s more common than uncommon for people to become so efficient at these motions that they actually begin to put weight back on even if they double the amount of time they spend on the treadmill, bike, or elliptical machine.

The only way to get in great shape is to constantly add variety so your mind and body is never given the chance to adapt to whatever you’re doing to get in shape. If this is done correctly your mind and body will be in a continuous state of adaptation; never given the chance to adapt. Adaptation and change have a direct relationship. Cessation of adaptation and change also have a direct relationship. They both change together but they also both stop together. Adaptation is the cause for change while cessation of adaptation is the cause for a sudden halt to changes. To keep the changes going you must keep the PROCESS of adaptation going.

Put Yourself First So You Can Help the Many

“I can’t put myself first there are too many people who need me and I have to generous of a heart to do so!”

The most selfless thing you can do is PUT YOURSELF FIRST IN YOUR LIFE.  Self neglect makes you less capable of helping others.  If you’re argument for self neglect is so you can more effectively help others then you have no argument and your ACTIONS are rather quite selfish than selfless even if you mean well.

Without great health, vitality, and clarity of mind you can’t be as affective as you could have been if only you had put yourself first.  There is nothing selfish about this philosophy.  Putting yourself first so you can help the many is the single most unselfish philosophy there is!  It may be hard for some to wrap their mind around but the honest to god truth is if you put yourself first, with selfless intentions, you will be able to act more selflessly in helping others than you could have otherwise.

It’s frustrating for me, as someone actively working in the world to help people live healthier lives, to hear someone say they are too busy helping other people to help themselves.   They even denote pride in using their generous giving nature to justify trashing their own lives in the name of helping others.  They are dead wrong in thinking they are somehow more affective in helping others while they just let their own health go.  I don’t know about any of you but I don’t even want help from someone trashing their own life in the name of helping me.  I’m too selfless to expect or want that out of anyone.

I’m not only speaking to people trashing their own lives in the name of helping other people.  I’m also speaking to those receiving help from those trashing their own lives to do so.  A totally selfless act when you see someone trashing their own life in the name of service to someone else would be to talk to that person about the selfless act of “me time” so that they can be more capable in living their passion of helping the many more effectively without eventually self destructing.  For every person who refuses to at least decompress once and a while that same person will inevitably suffer a nervous break down, clinical exhaustion, a Monday morning stroke right out of bed, possibly even death.  It may not happen today or next year but you should know that it WILL happen in your lifetime if YOU do not take care of yourself.  It’s much better to intervene on yourself now rather than by the force of nature later.  You will not pass on of natural causes peacefully in your sleep at a ripe old age if you don’t take care of yourself as often as you need to.

Take a bath, read a good book, listen to good audio, watch a relaxing movie, meditate, pray, exercise every day, eat wholesome nutritious food everyday, drink a Shakeology every day, go for a walk in a peaceful area, go fishing, go for a bike ride, go for a jog, go out for a nice dinner, spend time around people who make you feel good, listen to music that allows you to decompress, take a vacation, take in a massage, have a small bowl of an all natural ice cream after lunch, enjoy a small piece of dark chocolate, have a glass of red wine once and a while with your dinner, light some candles, practice yoga, do whatever you’ve got to do to put yourself first so you can help the many more effectively and do it REGULARLY!  If you took a bath or a shower just once and stopped you’d start stinking very quickly.  Your mental, spiritual, and physical health work the same way.

Super Sodas and Fortified Drinks aren't Healthier

You've seen them on local and national supermarket shelves: Bottles of soda, juice and water touting nutritional benefits like, "added vitamins" and, "fortified with nutrients".  Right?

You have to consume a LOT of sugar to get a very small amount of nutrients from those beverages.  A glass of tap water and a multivitamin with zero calories and no sugar, or a Shakeology, is a better choice if you need more vitamins and minerals.  If you're physically active or if you exercise regularly you need more nutrients than a sedentary person does or you'll weaken your immune system.

A bottle of Fuze Vitalize contains much more than the Recommended Daily Allowance of calcium, a potential problem for those who are prone to kidney stones or have concerns about prostate health.  That's quite a health concern!

Other fortified beverages have negligible amounts of the nutrients touted on the label.  "An 8 ounce serving of diet coke plus for example contains just 15 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance amount of niacin." - American dietetic association.

Labels are fraudulent at best.  You are not getting extra added nutritional benefits from drinking Super Sodas and Fortified Drinks.   The very small amount of extra added vitamins and minerals in them is more than offset by the large amount of sugars.  If you were to consume enough of these super drinks to fulfill your daily recommended allowance of vitamins and minerals you'd literally die of a sugar over dose and you still wouldn't even have all your complete vitamins and minerals.

If you're physically active, or if you exercise regularly, you NEED more vitamins and minerals in your daily nutrition or the extra added physical activities will weaken your immune system rather than strengthen your immune system.  Instead of swallowing multi vitamin pills every day, and maybe you like that which is fine but if you want something else, try getting a surplus of nutrients in a shakeology that tastes like a dessert.  I drink one every morning, I NEVER get sick, and I work out HARD.  I have a "super sonic" like immune system.  I NEVER get sick anymore and I use to get good and sick with every change of seasons like most people do.

If I'm going to drink a soda it's going to be an all natural cane cola which tastes MUCH better than any soft drink with artificial sweeteners or fortified soft drink anyway :-)  In addition to that I will drink them in LOW moderation because they are still loaded with sugar but at least it's wholesome good for you taste better all natural sugar :)

Amputations are a Common Reality for Diabetics and almost 100% preventable

One of the most unpleasant VERY possible consequences of diabetes is amputation, usually of the foot or leg.  The rate of amputation for people with diabetes is ten times higher (not ten percent but one thousand percent higher) than for people without diabetes.  

According to Dr. Christopher Segler, a diabetic food surgeon, diabetics are up to 46 times more likely to undergo an amputation.  That’s a four thousand six hundred percent increase of loosing a limb according to a professional who works specifically in that field! 

Dr. Segler goes on to say the following...
    “Within one year after a diabetic foot amputation, 26.7% will have another amputation. Three years after the first diabetic amputation, 48.3% will have another amputation. Within 5 years of a diabetes related amputation, 60.7% will have another amputation.  If that isn't bad enough, diabetics with amputations don’t live very long. We know that about 50% of all diabetics with an amputation are dead 3 years after the amputation.  65% of all of those with a diabetic amputation are dead 5 years.  Every 30 seconds a limb somewhere is amputated as a consequence of diabetes.”  - Dr. Seglers Blog

In 2004 some 71,000 lower limb amputations were carried out on people with diabetes.  Just a few years later that number has increased to 80,000 amputations a year for people with diabetes and continues to rise.  Nearly all of these amputations were and are 100% preventable by the daily choices people living with diabetes make.  This Prevention Responsibility extends to Pre Diabetics as well as diabetics.  VERY sadly, so few pre diabetics and diabetics do not start changing their lifestyle in a SUSTAINABLE way until they're already on what's called the "Stairway To Amputation" because of a combination of ignorance among patients and doctors. Even more sad and incredibly frustrating to those of us who give a damn; for the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY many diabetics and pre diabetics with kids are letting their children follow in their footsteps of diabetes.  People who have lost limbs at no fault of their own could justifiably judge this.

All of this is largely; overwhelming a result of CHOICE.  That means you have a LOT to be excited and hopeful about if you are diabetic, pre diabetic, or know someone who is.  Even if you arent diabetic or pre diabetic you know many people who are.  We all do which is a sad statement in itself.  My mom is a severe type two diabetic.  Many of my moms friends are.  I know lots and lots of people with this problem.  I love them but most of them brought it on themselves.  Exercise some sensitive but Tough love with a loved one who is diabetic or pre diabetic.  In my view it's far more callous to not tell someone with a problem that they have a problem.  This could be any problem (i.e. drugs, alcholol, bad nutrition) but for this article lets stick with diabetes which for most people is caused by an inactive lifestyle and poor nutritional choices.  If you or someone who suffers from diabetes or is pre diabetic maybe you should tell them, "If you don't eat better and get more physically active you could suffer an amputation along with a lot of misery down the road".  If they beg to differ ask them, "Show me your findings to suggest otherwise and lets compare.  Do you have any evidence to support your claim?"

My plead to you is that if you care about your health and you are diabetic or pre diabetic DO NOT WAIT to start making some simple sustainable changes that will keep diabetes from ruling and ruining your life.  You may not loose a limb or die today if you put it off another day but eventually you're life will be ruined by this disease while your loved ones are forced to watch.   What separates winners from losers is that winners Act TODAY and everyday because they fully understand that the cost of waiting is greater than acting TODAY and they understand that the compounding affect of interest over time is either going to work for them or against them.  Losers may or may not realize the cost of waiting and the compounding affect of interest over time but for whatever reason they procrastinate anyway (or act for a little while then quit) and before they know it something terrible such as the "Stairway To Amputation" starts creeping in and destroys their life while loved ones are forced to watch.

Not to sound too cliche here but you have a choice  (choosing not to choose is a self imposed stripping of your own power over your own destiny; putting yourself on the failure side of the fence).  Are you going to read all of this coupled with your own research and then decide that getting better just isn't for you?  Are you going to decide that your family doesn't deserve to have you at your best?   Do you want your loved ones to watch in agony as you deteriorate before there helpless eyes?  You don't live in isolation on your own little island.  What you decide has a potentially devastating or potentially joyous affect on people around you.  Or, are you going to stop procrastinating (waiting for tomorrow to come) and begin making some sustainable changes TODAY that lead to a better you?  I hope you choose the latter.


Don't procrastinate and don't act only for a little while then quit.  Take care of yourself every day starting TODAY and talk to your loved ones about it.

My 100th Article! "What makes you think I should listen to you, Tom?"

A lot of people are self proclaimed experts at something or another.  Some of them really are and can profoundly help other people.   Many are not the experts they claim to be and can cause some real damage, even death, in their recipients.

I do not know if I am an expert in anything.  Sometimes I feel like I am and other times not so much.  I'm certainly NOT replacing advice given to you from health care professionals.  All I know is that I absolutely unequivocally LOVE learning, doing, and teaching.  I also know that I have significantly helped and am helping a lot of people live better lives which just DRIVES me to keep learning, doing, and teaching even more!  The thought of how many MORE people I could possibly help to live better lives really excites the heck out of me!  My Team Beachbody business is my main vehicle in doing that.  I’m going to keep going to see what’s possible; to see how close I get to living up to my full potential in touching as many lives as I can till I take my last breath.  That’s how I feel about this whole deal.

This is my 100th article I’ve written as just one part of my efforts to teach, motivate, and inspire people to make better decisions that lead to living a better life. 

Don’t just arbitrarily listen to me go out there and research so that you can make up your own mind.  I’m just one person who is actively going out there every day to learn so that I can practice and teach.  I've taken classes and earned straight A's, I've attended seminars, I've read books, I've listened to good audio, I've made countless discoveries from my continuous pursuit of learning that I put to use daily in my own life etc.  Listen to what I have to say so that your own interest in learning for yourself can be sparked and acted on.  It’s mentally rewarding to do for yourself and psychologically very good for your moral esteem.

My growing knowledge within the articles I write is a total sum of all the learning I have done from probably hundreds of different sources.  It’s really interesting to think that just from listening to or reading literature from one person that you are taking in a composite of hundreds of other sources indirectly.  But, none the less these hundreds of sources are being interpreted by just one person; me!  So, listen to me because I do have intelligent good tutored ideas but also listen to me for the purposes of sparking your own active learning so that you can think for yourself and make up your own mind.  Don’t arbitrarily listen to me and then ask why you should listen to me because that’s just dumb.  So far no one has asked me why they should listen to me but if it does happen the first thing I am going to say in response is, “I’d love to see your findings so we can compare.  Do you have any?”.

I suppose one very simple and overlooked reason I might be an ideal source for many to listen to is that most people in our culture are not happy and want some new direction.  For someone wanting out of a tough situation it’s better to listen to someone who has pulled themselves out of darkness than to keep rocking right along with the same ole same ole. 

For example; if you’ve been following me for any period of time you know I’m an ardent advocate for and user of Shakeology.  I NEVER get sick anymore and I feel great every day that I drink a Shakeology so naturally I drink it EVERY day so that every day fully counts in my favor instead of against my favor.  I get testimonials nearly every day from users who feel the same so naturally I think everyone who wants to live better NEEDS to be drinking Shakeology.  If you spend a good chunk of your life easily fatigued, if you experience low energy every day, if you get sick easily with the change of seasons etc then you are obviously not Drinking Shakeology and you SHOULD be.  My Shakeology users as well as myself are worth listening to because we know!  We are experiencing phenomenal health and wellness.

Eat some Fish and Protect your Kidneys Especially if You're Diabetic

It’s very well known and established that eating wild caught fish is very good for you. There is a specific health benefit to eating fish for those of us with diabetes that you may not know about.

When a persons kidneys are damaged, abnormally high amounts of protein are found in the urine.   High urine protein levels are one of the first signs of kidney disease.  Diabetes is the leading cause of end stage kidney disease.

Diabetics Self Management published a study that consisted of over 20,000 people; 500 of whom are diabetics.  The individuals who ate less than one serving of fish per week are four times likelier (not 4% but 400% likelier) to have high urine protein levels than those who ate fish regularly.

Eating fish of any kind, fried or un fried, appears to have a protective effect on the kidneys of people with diabetes.  Keep in mind that fried and un fried only speaks to the protective affect it has on the kidneys it does not take in account for extra calories and so on so eat more grilled and baked fish than breaded and fried fish for more well rounded TOTAL health benefits.   This holds true for both diabetic and non diabetic people.
